A message from the Social Secretary for the Wimborne Athletics Youth Committee
‘Before the 2024 AGM we had for Wimborne Athletics Club, I had the idea to bring youth voices into our club which turned into the Youth Committee. It’s a group of athletes from the U14 level all the way to the U18 level, who meet up each month/two months to discuss: what is going on in the club, what athletes have fed back to members, and to talk about the things we are working on or want to start working on, based on feedback and our own ideas. Some of those we are working on currently are a block rental system (for athletes who don’t want to commit to buying an expensive pair of blocks); an equipment shed at the jumps end of QE; and more modern equipment for our training sessions across the club. With me being the Social Events Secretary, as well, the team also helps put on our social events for the club. This year we have organised a Quiz Night that happened in April, this Fun Run, and an Awards Night at the end of the year. And we realised that to put our ideas into fruition, we’d need to raise some money. One of the team suggested a Fun Run and that’s where the idea grew. We had a really successful (albeit rainy) event last year, and we wanted to do it annually which is why we are doing it again. It’s at Dumpton School, there’ll be a bake sale, a raffle, and other summer games like rounders and welly wanging – it’s an event for the whole family. What we pride ourselves on is the fact that the Youth Committee is run and organised entirely by U18s, we are the only athletics club in the area where it is run that way, and I think that is a very special thing!
